Meet our Pastor - Kahu Mark
Mark Poppen first joined our congregation as a Visiting Pastor from August
through November 2025 and has now agreed to walk with us during this important time in the life of
our church. In this role, Rev. Dr. Poppen provides leadership in worship, preaching, and pastoral care, and
supports the congregation as it prepares to discern and call a permanent pastor.
His academic and professional
background make him especially well-suited to support Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church at this moment in its ministry.
To celebrate ten years of faithful ministry at his first congregation, church leaders arranged a two-week tour of
the Hawaiian islands. Kaua‘i was by far a favorite. Mark and his wife Jean returned to vacation on the North
Shore every other or every third year, since then.
Rich themes from his post-graduate academic study have informed and empowered his ministry. His doctoral
dissertation focused on discernment. It is titled, “The Cry for Clarity - Coaching Vocational Conversations
about Ministry Leadership.” He researched how individuals and faith communities listen deeply, make
decisions together, and remain grounded in hope, when the way forward feels uncertain. He reviewed and
edited portions of this work on Kauaʻi. Pastor Mark spent time at Black Pot Beach, and Pavilion, places of
beauty and inspiration that helped to shape his reflections on listening, discernment and obedience. He sent
the final draft of his dissertation to the academic committee, from Kaua‘i, as completion of his academic
requirements. Insights from his ministry experience and his research, continue to inform his pastoral approach
today.
Mark's kindness is genuine and contagious. His preaching is Biblical, relevant and engaging. He is
deeply committed to building a faith community that extends in all directions from Waiʻoli—beyond our
sanctuary walls and into daily life, relationships, and the wider world.
Rev. Dr. Poppen is joined by his wife, Jean, a retired music educator. Together, they value service, shared
learning, a love of music and faith that is enriched in community.
